It was tax season - again

After a while, Kara discovered that childcare was just not her thing. So was looking around for another job. This happened to coincide with tax season again and Jacqui needed some additional help to meet demand. So Jacqui asked Kara if she would come on board for a couple of months to help out and to see how she liked it.

Jaqui starts her first business

Initially worried that there wouldn't be enough clients, however, by the end of the first year she had accumulated a nice bunch of clientele through word of mouth. Many of whom are still Jacquis clients.

The start of the Journey - 'Just so happened'

Dec, 1998

Time for something new

After many years of the same-old annual cycle of fresh tax accountants, training them, the new accountants doing peoples work differently from the previous years accountants, overseeing their work, fixing up mistakes only to repeat the process the next year. Jacqui knew that there had to be a better way so decided it was time to go out on her own to offer a better, focused & personalised tax accounting service.

The norm

This cycle continued - new seasonal workers, train them, oversee the work, sign off tax papers, fix oversights later in the year repeat. As well as keeping on top of new tax laws & changes.

The 5 months was up

Expecting to be let-go, Jacqui was instead offered a permanent position. Jacqui was the only seasonal worker that year to be offered a permanent role.

The discovery

By stepping up with her additional study, Jacqui became the 'go-to' person in the office for rental properties. And after a few months, Jacqui found despite prior expectations, she actually quite enjoyed accounting

Time to step up

Feeling pressure to do a great job and the lack of great training, Jacqui took it upon herself to find out more and spent her spare time at home studying rental property tax law.

Reality sinks in

It quickly became apparent that the training case studies didn't match the real world. There was a lot of things and situations that had not been covered, especially when it came to real-world record keeping for Rental properties and investments.

Jaqui starts temporary work as a seasonal part time tax worker

Jacqui passed training with flying colours and offered the job. (along with a handful other successful colleges).

Training to be a seasonal tax worker

Jacqui attended the training week, along with all the other hopefuls. It involved a lot of different tax accounting scenarios with tests to see if the trainees could put the figures correctly into the right order. There was a catch however that not everyone who completed the training would necessarily be offered a job.

Phase 2

The following morning the phone rang. It was the recruiter calling to say she that Jacqui had been successful and should she want to continue to attend training the next week.

The Interview

It was a sunny autumn day in Sydney when Jacqui went to the interview. She felt that uncomfortable interview feeling (Enthusiasm, wondering about the possibilities, questions, fearing rejection and disappointment - all at the same time). After many questions, the interview was over, so Jacqui returned home to keep looking for jobs.

Jacqui had almost forgotten about the job when a little while later a phone call came in asking Jacqui to attend an interview next week. Little did she know it then but that call changed her life forever

Dad saw Ad. in the Newspaper

Finding part-time work that was close to home wasn't exactly easy in the 1980s. Jacqui's Dad happened to read the newspaper daily and saw an ad in the paper looking for candidates for 5 months of seasonal tax work. The job provided training and part-time temporary work and was starting in the next few weeks. At the time, Jacqui wasn't especially interested in being an accountant but applied anyway.

Jacqui started looking to re-enter the workforce

In the 1980s, after having two small children, it was time to renter the workforce. Although this time Jacqui was looking for part-time work to be there for her children when they got back from school. This significantly restricted where she could work and what type of work was available.
